Prunes For Expecting Mums

We are all content eating our bananas & grapes aren’t we? How about some superfruits to give all-round benefit to your body?

Here is one superfruit that is gaining a lot of attention of late in the Indian scenario.

I am talking about PRUNES! 🙂


Prunes are nothing but sweet and juicy dried plums that offer a host of health benefits.

California prunes are considered to be among the finest in the world and the state is the international leader in prunes production.

Prunes are great as a snack at any time of the day and can be accommodated as a part of your daily meals easily.

They are easy to store, don’t spoil readily like fresh fruits and are ready to eat anywhere, any time.

Prunes are the best for pregnant woman. Pregnancy being a time of joyful anticipation, there are a lot of good reasons why prunes can play an important role in the health of woman during pregnancy or nursing.

Prunes are a rich source of fibre, minerals and also offer other benefits including the ones below.


Pregnant women need fluids to carry nutrients throughout the body and to get rid of toxic waste products.

Nursing mothers also need fluids to help in milk production.

Nutrient rich, natural prunes serve as an ideal source for fluid content – there’s nothing artificial in them nor any sugar content.


Iron is important to enrich a mother’s blood supply. Baby must store extra iron for the first four to six months when his/her diet is only breast milk, which has little iron.

Iron is a crucial nutrient for red blood cells, that transport oxygen to tissues throughout the body.

Prunes are considered to be a good natural source of iron and potassium.


Constipation is common during pregnancy. After pregnancy, a  woman who has had a C-section or an episiotomy may be fearful of bowel movements because of her stitches.

Prunes prevent constipation and help in relaxing your bowels & stools. They can also prevent formation of painful hemorrhoids when taken regularly.


If you are already diabetic or have been identified with gestational diabetes, your doctor might advise you to refrain from eating sugar rich fruits like mangoes, bananas, papaya & pineapple.

Prunes are also rich in Vitamin A, important for healthy eyes and skin, vision, growth and the immune system – both for you and your baby.

It also contains potassium, necessary for nerve impulses and muscle contractions and magnesium which is vital to many basic metabolic functions.

It contains copper as well – a trace mineral which helps the body to metabolize carbohydrates to generate energy.


Various brands of prunes are available in the market today. You can easily find a pack of prunes in any supermarket shelf or fruit-selling store.


Yes, they could be pricey when compared to other fruits (being imported), but with the host of benefits they are tagged with, you just can’t ignore it!

You don’t really need to be pregnant, to reap the benefits of prunes. It is ideal for people of all ages – from kids to the elderly.

Inculcate the habit of eating atleast 2 prunes a day – you will reap benefits in the long run!


Though I knew about prunes, I never really made them a part of my regular diet until my third trimester. When my hunger pangs where going out of bounds, I decided to stock something healthy and natural in the fridge and that is when I stumbled upon this in a local supermarket & decided to cart it!

You can just refrigerate them and have them chilled or can make smoothies, milkshakes or bread-spreads out of them to incorporate them along with your regular food.
